Anti-social elements are resorting to violence against Public Service Providers (healthcare, education, social welfare, etc.) and vandalism of institutions with increasing frequency in our nation.
It is observed that government and law enforcement officials are reluctant and slow to apply existing legal provisions against the perpetrators of such crimes. Over time, the charges are watered down and many attackers ultimately get away scot-free.
These attacks can and will stop only if these lumpen elements are arrested, and a fast-track hearing is conducted to mete out exemplary punishment to them. This should serve as a deterrent to groups / individuals who resort to mindless violence.
As law-abiding and responsible citizens, we need to join the Medical Fraternity in demanding that prompt and adequate justice is done. We invite all citizens to sign this online campaign in support of the management, doctors, employees and patients of Holy Cross Hospital, Kalyan.
DECLARATION OF CONFERENCE OF RELIGIOUS INDIA – WESTERN REGION
REGARDING THE MOB VIOLENCE AT HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL, KALYAN
Mumbai, 29th November, 2017
We, the Conference of Religious India (Western region), stand with the management (Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross), doctors, staff and patients of Holy Cross Hospital, Murbad road, Kalyan.
We condole the untimely death of Rohit Bhoir, aged 22 years, on Monday, 27th November 2017 and we offer heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members.
At the same time, we strongly condemn the unwarranted attack and senseless violence perpetrated by a mob of more than 300 persons in the afternoon and evening of the same day, on the personnel and patients of Holy Cross Hospital, as well as on a journalist and police officials. We denounce the destruction of the hospital premises, medical equipment and property as an unprovoked criminal act.
We urge the government authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this attack, arrest the perpetrators and conduct a fast-track trial to mete out exemplary punishment that should serve as a deterrent to groups or individuals who resort to mindless violence.
We demand that the damages (material, physical, mental and emotional) to the institution and its personnel be compensated in full measure at the earliest, so that Holy Cross Hospital and its personnel may resume their selfless service in favour of the ordinary citizens of our nation.
We call on the elected representatives of the citizens (MLAs and MPs) to propose and enact policies to set in place practical measures to curb mindless violence against institutions and personnel at the service of citizens (in healthcare, education, social welfare and public services).
